Rick, thanks for the comment. I love fireworks, so I have experimented with different settings. For scenes like Niagara Falls, using f/8 or smaller aperture requires longer exposure to pickup the ambient light for the background structures, and a long exposure usually burns out the highlight in the fireworks. Here is a shot http://franklinwang.com/2011/05/victoria-day-fireworks/, in which I used the settings that you suggested and it worked out well.

Hey franklin. I still like this shot except for the guy in the back. He should be wearing an Ottawa Senator's shirt. As far as I've figured, it is still a holiday here in Nova Scotia. Just not a statutory one. I could be wrong.

Good luck shooting.

Here's the way I shoot fireworks.
Set the ISO to 100 | F Stop to F8 or F11
Set your camera on Bulb.
Block the viewfinder hole with tape at the back.

Have a flat black piece of cardboard and keep covering the lens after a few seconds of each burst. Do several bursts then release the shutter.

The biggest thing to me would be the aperture. I definitely would use F8 or higher.

Thanks Jen for the comment. These colors can definitely brighten up a drab, cold Canadian winter day.
