Creating A Family Album, On the Cloud

Vanessa_Jesse_Mississauga_Ontario.jpg

A few years ago I created a slideshow of my children’s photos using Windows Live Movie Maker and completed with some of my favourite easy listening tunes.  I then burned the slideshow onto DVDs and gave them to my brother and sisters.  That was before Facebook became very popular.  In fact, there were only about 100 million Facebook users at the time I created the slideshow in 2008.  Today, the number of Facebook users has grown to more than 800 million users.  Getting connected with families, friends, and colleagues on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social networks has become the way of life for many people.  Though I am not a very “social” person, it is time for me to rethink and recreate my family album, and put it on the cloud.

Going through photos from the past years has brought a lot of joy and laughter to my wife and me.  We found the above photo in my external hard drive, and it is one of those photos that we have long forgotten.  It is a photo of baby Jesse and his cousin Vanessa, who made a two-hour trip from London, Ontario to see Jesse and welcome him into this world.  The image was shot on a film camera and converted to digital using my $29 Canon all-in-one colour printer.  With just a few adjustments in Photoshop to clean up the image and add an aged photo effect, this photo now belongs to my new family album on the cloud.

Mississauga Farmers’ Market

The warm weather that we had yesterday made me think of the fresh vegetables and fruits at the local Farmers’ Markets, so I pulled this image out from my archive and edited it just a bit to boost the colours and contrast.  It won’t be long before the Farmers’ Markets will reopen again.

Jazz Up the Festival with Numbers

Today, July 3rd, marks the end of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, which is in its 25th year.  The event is one of North America’s premier jazz festivals.  As such it has built up some very impressive numbers over its 25 years of history.  Here are the numbers I found on the event’s official website.

For 2011:

- Number of days:  10
- Number of locations:  40
- Number of patrons:  over 500,000
- Number of performances:  350
- Number of musicians:  1,500

For the previous 24 years:

- Number of artists presented:  24,000 (85% of whom were Canadian)
- Number of free public events:  1,800
- Amount of money contributed to the GTA economy:  $380 million
- Number of volunteer hours:  54,000 hours
- Number of people attended the Festival:  7.5 million

Pictured above are the three members of the Pablo Menendez & Mezcla Cuban All Stars band.  In the middle is Pablo Menendez.  To his right is JoJazz Award recipient Mayquel Gonzalez, and to his left is the saxaphone player Nestor Rodriguez.  They performed at the Historic Distillery District last night, and I was there with my family.

As Canadians, we are proud of who we are, what we represent, and we are not afraid to show it.

Happy Canada Day!

It’s Better Through the Viewfinder, No?

FW110625141341.jpg

This gentleman has got $5,000 worth of camera gear hanging on his shoulder while watching the Dragon Boat Race with his binoculars.  I know what I would do with this gear.  The view is definitely better through the viewfinder, no?
